This is one of the few audio recordings of C.S. Lewis in existence. It contains some of the foundational concepts upon which he based his book, Mere Christianity.
CS Lewis is absolutely one of my heroes! Both as a theologian and as an author.
But I’ve come to think differently on one of the points he presents early in this.
I love his explanation of the fact that yes, God can indeed hear and pay attention to seven billion people who all pray to him at the same time. But I’m not as comfortable with the explanation that this is because he’s “outside of time.”
If God is outside of time, then it’s rather awkward to also assert that he is walking with me, as I am clearly within the realm of time. This may be a limitation of my imagination, but I have a tough time imagining a God who is outside time walking with a mortal who is inside time. But then, he IS omnipresent, the theologians tell me.
Moreover, I keep running into places where it appears that God is discovering things (like Gen 18:21 or Jer 32:35).
I’m certainly not ready to argue theology with Clive Staples, but I see good evidence that he is inside time with you and me. But maybe his omnipresence allows him to be both outside and inside of time simultaneously?
This may be the time to echo Psalm 139:6: “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.”
I do want to thank you for posting this. I get your newsletters via e-mail, there are just a few people that I do. This answered my question I kept asking God last year. I thought He has used the praying medic to get his answer to me. I told Him thank you. I got saved at home in 1981, for a year or so it was just God and me, and me and God. The 2 of us.
There was a wonderful honeymoon period, newly in love with my Father, my Savior. Reading the bible, discovering Christian books and radio, etc. Then I finally went to church and I still remember the first time hearing other people stand up and testify about God/Jesus and I was a little jealous at first, like “Hey” that is my God, my Jesus your talking about : ) I was on another blog site somewhere and another woman wrote she was jealous others relationship with The Lord. And I understood where she was coming from. ….Then I guess being on the computer with so many people, social media, blogs and youtube, and it can all get overwhelming sometimes……so many voices, that I got to asking God last year, “How can you know everybody and hear everyone’s prayers”? I am starting to feel lost in the crowd.
It’s way beyond me and my understanding. In my head I hear “lean not to your own understanding” and then I was like,”I want to be special, I have never been special in my whole life, ….I was the middle kid and an introvert to boot!!!” I am almost 60, I should be more grownup, maybe I am heading into my 2nd childhood. HA!! I was like “I am one among billions of people.” So I am thankful God got this message to me thru C.S. Lewis and the praying medic. You never know how God is going to work, He moves in mysterious ways. This video he said that when you are praying it is like you are the only one and on the cross, “He died for you”. When I was listening to this it was God talking to me, thru C.S. Lewis’ voice. “Hey” it is Me and you : ) The other night I was in bed talking to the Father and Jesus and I pictured me in the middle between The Father and Jesus and we all 3 had our arms linked. Really we are closer that that. Christ in you, the hope of Glory. The Kingdom of God is within. Thank you very much for posting this. I love the things you post either yours or your guests. Bless you!!!!
