Receiving Your Dreams

The last time I went overseas I had a decision to make about the delivery of my mail. I could continue receiving it as normal. But I knew that if I chose to, when I returned, my mailbox would be jammed with letters and packages and some would not be delivered because my mailbox is small. I decided instead to have the post office hold my mail until I returned home. The way in which we receive dreams from God is like the way we receive mail.

Many of us believe God chooses whom He sends dreams to and whom He does not. We can do nothing to control the dreams we receive from Him. He has reasons for giving dreams to some and not to others. We suspect He may have favorites. If you’re on the list of favorites, you get all the dreams you could ever want (lucky you). But if you’re not on the list—you receive nothing. I believe God wants to give dreams and visions to everyone. And I suspect He has attempted to send them to all of us, but many of us have unknowingly prevented them from being delivered.

How can we prevent God from giving us dreams and visions?

Revelation from God comes to us through our spirit and is received by our soul in our imagination. Because our imagination resides in our soul, it is not controlled by God. It’s under the control of our will. By exercising our will, we can choose to receive or reject any revelation that comes through it. Once we’ve decided not to receive revelation through our imagination, God may send us dreams, but we will not receive them.

I have a friend who has been a believer for 40 years. He confided in me the other day that he doesn’t have many dreams and that when he does, they are usually of a sexual nature. He said hasn’t had dreams in several months. He read my book Seeing in the Spirit Made Simple and came to my discussion of shutting down our imagination because of things we’ve seen that we don’t like. It occurred to him that perhaps he had shut down his ability to receive dreams from God because he was having dreams he didn’t like. He made a conscious decision to open his imagination. He wrote to me saying that since making this decision, he’s had dreams every night and so far, only one has been of a sexual nature.

God wants to give us dreams and visions. He has many things He wants to show us. But we can either consciously or unconsciously prevent ourselves from receiving them.

If you’re not seeing visions or having dreams, you might consider whether you’ve shut down your imagination. If you have, simply verbalizing out loud that you want to receive revelation from God can open up your imagination. When dreams and visions are received, if you see things you don’t want to see, remind the enemy that you’re not his pawn. Tell him you will not receive any revelation from him. It’s a simple application of the verse, Resist the devil and he will flee from you. In the same way that you shut down the flow of revelation from God, you can shut down the flow of revelation from the enemy. If you resist the revelation the enemy sends, it will gradually subside and over time, leave completely.
