‘Spiritual bypassing’ means one is involving themselves in spiritual matters and spiritual communities as a way of avoiding the real issues in their life. I know it well, having done it for years until I came across the term and realized what I was doing. My real issues involve bringing my skills and talents out into the real world and feeling some power there, something that, as a trauma survivor, I was terrified to do. Now I celebrate each small step forward as a writer, poet and photographer (poetry published in six countries; images in calendars, cards and as framed prints in people’s homes).
